Dryer Takes Two Cycles? Check the Vent Before the Element

We have completed 3,196 dryer repairs. If there is one thing worth knowing before you call anyone, it is this: the vent line causes more failures than the heating element, the thermostat and the control board put together.

How restriction becomes a "broken" dryer

A dryer works by moving heated air through the drum and out. Restrict that airflow and heat has nowhere to go, so internal temperature climbs. The thermal fuse then does exactly what it was designed to do and cuts the circuit.

The homeowner sees a dryer that tumbles but no longer heats, and assumes the element failed. Often the element is fine. Replace the fuse without clearing the vent and the same thing happens again within weeks β€” because the cause was never touched.

Signs the vent is the problem

  • Clothes need two or three cycles to dry
  • The laundry room gets noticeably hot and humid during a cycle
  • The outside vent flap barely moves when the dryer runs
  • Clothes come out hot but still damp

This is also a fire risk

Lint is fuel. A vent line packed with it, sitting against a heating element that is running hotter than designed, is the mechanism behind most dryer fires. Cleaning the line once a year is the cheapest maintenance in the house.

Gulf Coast humidity makes it worse

Damp lint packs tighter than dry lint. Along the Texas coast, where humidity stays high well into autumn, vent lines load up faster than the same installation would further inland. Our dryer call volume peaks in July at 462 jobs against 162 in September β€” a 185% swing that airflow explains most of.

When it genuinely is the heat circuit

The heat circuit has four failure points and only one is the element: thermal fuse, cycling thermostat, high-limit cut-off, and the element itself. On gas dryers add the igniter and valve coils. Three of them fail in a way that looks identical from the front panel, which is why we test the whole circuit under load rather than replacing on assumption.

Noise is the drum, not the motor

Rumbling and squealing come from worn rollers, a stretched belt or a seized idler pulley. All three are inexpensive parts, and all three are cheaper caught before they damage the drum.

How to check the vent in five minutes

You do not need tools for a first assessment.

  • Run the dryer and go outside. Find the exterior vent. The flap should be pushed open with a steady stream of warm air. Weak flow, or a flap barely moving, is your answer.
  • Pull the machine out and disconnect the duct. Run the dryer for a moment with the duct off. If it heats and dries normally that way, the machine is fine and the line is blocked.
  • Look at the duct itself. Flexible foil and plastic ducting crushes behind the machine and catches lint in every ridge. Rigid or semi-rigid metal is far better and is what we recommend on every install.
  • Check the run length. Long runs with multiple elbows restrict airflow badly. Every 90-degree bend costs you several feet of effective length.

The failure sequence, in order

Vent faults follow a predictable path, and knowing where you are on it tells you how urgent this is:

  • Cycles start taking slightly longer. Nobody notices.
  • Clothes come out hot but damp. People start running two cycles.
  • The laundry room gets hot and humid during a run.
  • The thermal fuse blows. The dryer tumbles with no heat.
  • If the fuse is replaced without clearing the line, the cycle repeats β€” and each round runs the machine hotter for longer.

The gap between step two and step four is where a cheap intervention exists. Two cycles to dry a load is not a quirk of an older machine. It is a warning.

Gas dryers add three failure points

Gas models have an igniter, a flame sensor and valve coils, and they fail in a specific pattern: the igniter glows, the coils do not open the valve reliably, and the dryer heats some cycles and not others. Intermittent heat on a gas dryer is almost always this, and it is not a vent fault.

Anything involving a gas connection is work for a technician. The diagnostics require reading current draw under load, and the consequences of guessing are not the same as with an electric machine.

What proper venting looks like

  • Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, never plastic or foil
  • The shortest practical run with the fewest bends
  • Joints taped, not fastened with screws β€” screws project into the duct and catch lint
  • An exterior flap that opens freely and closes when the dryer stops
  • Vented outside, never into an attic, crawl space or garage

How often should the vent line be cleaned?

Once a year for most households. Twice if you have a long run, a large family, or wash a lot of towels and bedding.

My dryer is new and still slow. Is it faulty?

Check the vent before assuming so. A new dryer connected to an old blocked line performs exactly like a broken one, and this is one of the most common calls we take after a delivery.

Can I vent into the garage over winter?

No. It puts a large volume of moisture and lint into an enclosed space, and on a gas dryer it also vents combustion products. It must go outside.

The thermal fuse keeps blowing. Why?

Because the underlying restriction was never cleared. The fuse is doing its job. Replacing it repeatedly without fixing airflow means the machine keeps reaching a temperature it should never see.
