Washing machines account for 5,835 of our completed jobs β 27% of everything. The single most common call is a machine that fills, washes, and then refuses to spin.
It is almost never the motor
A washer will not spin with water still in the tub. That is deliberate: spinning a full drum would be violent and unsafe. So anything that stops the water leaving stops the spin cycle, and the machine looks dead when the drain is the actual fault.
Check the drain path first
- Filter or coin trap. Front-loaders have an access panel low on the front. Buttons, coins and lint collect there and eventually block flow.
- Drain pump. A pump that hums but moves nothing usually has an obstruction in the impeller.
- Drain hose. Kinked behind the machine, or pushed too far down the standpipe so it siphons.
Then the lid switch or door lock
A washer will not spin with the lid believed open. The switch is a small, inexpensive part that takes thousands of cycles and eventually stops making contact. This is a frequent cause and a cheap fix.
Belt and coupler
On belt-driven machines a stretched or broken belt produces exactly the "washes but will not spin" complaint. Direct-drive machines use a coupler that wears the same way.
Noise and walking are a different warning
A machine that rocks by hand, growls on spin, or walks across the floor is telling you about the suspension or the drum bearing. Caught early this is a repair. Ignored, the vibration damages the bearing housing and the machine becomes uneconomic.
Level the machine first β genuinely level, with a spirit level on the top panel, all four feet firm. A surprising share of vibration calls end there.
Why front-loaders start to smell
Residue collects in the door gasket folds and in the drum. Hard water makes it worse: detergent does not dissolve fully, and the film that remains feeds odour. Cleaning the gasket, running a maintenance cycle hot, and cutting the detergent dose usually resolves it. If it returns quickly, the drain or the sump is holding water.
Reading the error code is not the same as diagnosing
Modern washers report errors, and the codes are genuinely useful β but they describe a symptom the machine detected, not the part that failed. A drain error means water was still present when the machine checked. That could be the pump, a blocked filter, a kinked hose, or a pressure sensor reporting water that already left.
Replacing the pump because the machine said "drain" is how people end up paying twice. The code narrows the search; it does not end it.
Draining the machine safely before any work
If the drum is full, that water has to come out before anything else happens.
- Switch the machine off at the wall
- Put towels and a shallow tray down β there will be more water than you expect
- Front-loaders: open the lower access panel. Most have a small drain hose beside the filter, which lets you empty it in stages
- Top-loaders: lower the drain hose into a bucket below the drum and let gravity work
Do not open the main filter on a full front-loader without draining first, unless you want the entire tub on the floor.
Faults grouped by what you can hear
Silence at the drain step
No pump noise at all points at power reaching the pump β the control, the wiring, or a failed pump winding.
Humming but no water moving
The pump is energised and jammed. Usually an obstruction in the impeller: a sock, a coin, a fragment of underwire.
Draining normally but no spin
If the water leaves and the drum still will not turn, look at the lid switch or door lock, then the belt or coupler, then the motor control.
Grinding or growling on spin
Drum bearing. This one gets worse quickly and gets more expensive as it does.
What shortens a washer's life fastest
- Overloading. The single most common cause of premature bearing and suspension failure. A drum should have room for a load to tumble.
- Too much detergent. Excess suds cushion the load, confuse the pressure sensor, and leave residue that feeds odour. Modern detergents are concentrated and most people use two to three times what is needed.
- Not being level. Vibration transmits into the bearing housing. Five minutes with a spirit level is genuine preventive maintenance.
- Leaving the door shut. On a front-loader, a closed door traps moisture in the gasket. Leave it ajar between washes.
Common questions
Can I run a washer with a bad bearing?
You can, briefly, but the noise is the outer race breaking up. Continued use damages the tub housing, which turns a repairable machine into a replacement.
Why is my washer suddenly taking two hours?
Usually low fill pressure or a partly blocked inlet screen β the machine waits for a water level it is not reaching. Check that both taps are fully open before anything else.
Front-loader or top-loader for hard water?
Neither is immune. Front-loaders use less water so detergent concentration matters more; top-loaders dilute more but heat less. Rinse aid, correct dosing and periodic descaling matter far more than the format.
Is it worth replacing a drain pump myself?
On many machines it is a genuinely accessible part. The risk is not the fitting β it is replacing a working pump because the real fault was upstream. Confirm the pump is dead before buying one.
